Red tiger shrimp

written by Admin
Wissenschaftlicher Name:
Caridina cf. cantonensis
Origin/distribution:

Southern China

Caridina cf. cantonensis var. blue tiger – Blaue Tigergarnele Karte von StepMap

Socialization:

Not to be socialized with other species of the Caridina serrata group (e.g. crystal red shrimp, black and red bee shrimp). Moreover, it is still unclear whether tiger shrimp hybridize with bumblebee shrimp.

Due to their lower reproductivity, a socialization with fish cannot be recommended.

Sexing:

Females are larger, and their abdomen is more pronounced than the males’. Adult females often have a brownish saddle (their ovary), and berried females can be easily identified by the eggs on their pleopods or swimming legs.

Female size: up to 35 mm

Male size: up to 25 mm

Water temperature:

16 to 24 °C (60 to 75 °F), a cooler winter temperature would correspond to the temperatures in their habitat.

Recommended water parameters
pH:
6 to 7,5
GH°:
up to 27
KH°:
up to 20
Tank size:
20 l upwards. Shrimp are social animals, it is therefore recommendable to keep at least 10 of them.
Futter:

All suitable shrimp foods, for more information please see “Some thoughts on shrimp food”.

Vermehrung:

Specialized type, i.e. fully developed shrimplets hatch from the eggs.

Breeding:

Reproduction in fairly good numbers when the conditions are right, however, not as numerous as Neocaridina species.

Different color variants, also in nature.

There is some likelihood of confusion with some strains of the red cherry shrimp (Neocaridina heteropoda), whose males may also have narrow red stripes. However, the red tiger shrimp always has five narrow red stripes on its abdomen, running bottom-up. The first two stripes point to the shrimp’s tail, the three rear stripes point to the front. Male Neocaridina heteropoda var. red are simply vertically striped.
